Public addresses must be unique on the internet. Private addresses, such as <em>192.168.x.x<\/em>, <em>10.x.x.x<\/em>, and <em>172.16.x.x to 172.31.x.x<\/em>, are reserved for local networks under RFC 1918 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfc-editor.org\/rfc\/rfc1918\" rel=\"nofollow\">[source: IETF]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TLDR:<\/strong> Your <strong>WAN IP<\/strong> is what websites, game servers, VPNs, and remote services see. Your <strong>LAN IP<\/strong> is what your router uses to talk to your laptop, phone, printer, or smart TV at home. For example, your router may have a WAN IP like <em>73.44.10.25<\/em>, while your laptop uses <em>192.168.1.24<\/em>. Seen by your router and local devices.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Router:<\/strong> Sits between both sides and passes traffic back and forth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why your devices do not all have public IPs<\/h2>\n<p>Most homes have many devices but only one public IPv4 address. That is normal. Your router uses <strong>NAT<\/strong>, short for <em>Network Address Translation<\/em>, to let many private devices share one public WAN IP.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, it feels like networking names were made harder than they needed to be. But NAT is easy to picture. Your router works like a front desk. Devices inside ask for websites. The router sends the request out using the WAN IP. When the reply comes back, the router remembers which device asked and sends the data to the right LAN IP.<\/p>\n<p>So your phone, laptop, console, and smart speaker may all appear online as the same public IP. Inside your home, though, each one keeps its own private LAN IP.<\/p>\n<h2>Common examples of WAN and LAN IPs<\/h2>\n<p>Your <strong>WAN IP<\/strong> could look like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>82.14.203.77<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>104.28.12.91<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>203.0.113.45<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your <strong>LAN IP<\/strong> usually looks like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>192.168.0.12<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>192.168.1.50<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>10.0.0.8<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>172.16.5.20<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That difference matters. If you are setting up a printer, file share, or game console at home, you usually need the <strong>LAN IP<\/strong>. If you are setting up remote access from outside your home, you usually need the <strong>WAN IP<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>How to find your WAN IP<\/h2>\n<p>The fastest way is to search for \u201cwhat is my IP\u201d in a browser. You can also log in to your router and check the internet or WAN status page.<\/p>\n<p>Expect to waste time on some router admin pages. A few hide the WAN IP under vague labels like <em>Internet Address<\/em>, <em>IPv4 Address<\/em>, or <em>Gateway Status<\/em>. It should take 10 seconds. Sometimes it takes five minutes because the menu names are awful.<\/p>\n<p>Be careful with privacy. Your WAN IP can reveal your rough location and internet provider. It usually cannot show your exact home address to a random website, but it is still not something to post in a public forum without a reason.<\/p>\n<h2>How to find your LAN IP<\/h2>\n<p>Your LAN IP is found on the device itself or in your router\u2019s device list.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Windows:<\/strong> Open Command Prompt and type <em>ipconfig<\/em>. Many home connections get a new public IP after a modem restart, service change, or network update.<\/p>\n<p>Your LAN IP can also change. Your router usually assigns it through DHCP. That is fine for phones and laptops. It can be annoying for printers, security cameras, NAS devices, and servers.<\/p>\n<p>For those devices, use a <strong>DHCP reservation<\/strong> in your router. That tells the router to give the same LAN IP to the same device every time. It is cleaner than setting the IP by hand on the device.<\/p>\n<h2>Security difference: public exposure vs private space<\/h2>\n<p>Your WAN IP is exposed to the internet. That does not mean your devices are open by default. Your router blocks most incoming traffic unless you allow it.<\/p>\n<p>Your LAN IPs are not directly reachable from the public internet. A website cannot connect straight to <em>192.168.1.24<\/em> in your home. That address may also exist in millions of other homes. Private IPs are reused everywhere, by design.<\/p>\n<p>Still, do not treat your LAN as risk-free. Weak router passwords, old firmware, unsafe port forwarding, and exposed cameras can create real problems. CISA advises users to secure home routers with strong passwords and updates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/news-events\/news\/securing-wireless-networks\" rel=\"nofollow\">[source: CISA]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>When you need each address<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use your WAN IP<\/strong> for remote access, VPN setup, firewall rules, hosting a service, or checking how the outside internet sees you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use your LAN IP<\/strong> for printers, local file sharing, router settings, smart home hubs, cameras, and device troubleshooting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not confuse them<\/strong> when setting port forwarding.
